poetry meme

jessica tagged me on this poetry meme. you're supposed to respond to the following prompts.
The first poem I remember reading was...
I was forced to memorize numerous poems in school and...
I read poetry because...
A poem I'm likely to think about when asked about a favorite poem...
I write poetry, but...
I find poetry...
The last time I heard poetry...
I think poetry is like...
i have so little to say in response to any of these. i mean, WOW i can't believe how little i have to say about these. i memorized all the u.s. presidents in sixth grade (we only had to do the first 8 but i was a little overachiever), and in high school i memorized the first ten lines of homer's odyssey (in greek). i can still remember the presidents, about the first 3 lines of the odyssey, the first sentence of caesar's gallic wars in latin, and also the first 5 or six lines of pound's canto one, and clark coolidge's "the so (part two)." this is the sole extent of my existing and surviving memorization. i think memorization is a good thing and that i should do more of it.

i read and write poetry for the same reason: because i have not yet found the poetry that i think must or could or should exist somewhere or at some point.

right now i'm far more excited about bohor (1962) by iannis xenakis, far and away the most amazing piece of modern composed music i've heard in quite some time. it could very well be lou reed's metal machine music scored for processed tubular bells or something. seriously amazing.
