recommended: alan wolfe's lengthy piece called "why conservatives can't govern" from the washington monthly. skip through part IV on the k street project if need be, but parts I (on the present state of things), especially II (the historical background) and III (on recent policy disasters) are essential reading. again makes you wonder how exactly we've gotten ourselves into this mess and if the democrats are remotely capable of getting us out.
